Jan 26, 2026
UCLA AUD's Julia Koerner sat down with UCLA's Daily Bruin this month for an interview about some of her teaching and research.
Koerner is associate adjunct professor and director of Summer Programs at AUD, where she has taught since 2012. She is an award-winning designer, innovator, and pioneer in 3D printing, sought after for collaborations that include 3D-printed costumes with Ruth E. Carter for Marvel's "Black Panther" and "Wakanda Forever," earning two Academy Awards. She is internationally recognized for design innovation in 3D printing and recently was awarded for her architectural design for ICON's 3d-printed affordable housing Initiative 99. Her personal practice, JK3D, crafts a variety of designs and products.
In her Daily Bruin interview, Koerner discusses some of her recent research studios at AUD, including her current year-long studio looking forward the 2028 Summer Olympics and the design opportunities at stake.
"Architects work in so many different fields and are so important in so many different industries," Koerner observes.
