Historically, religious buildings offer bold and easily readable architectural symbols for the manifestation of political and social power. In order to challenge the formal strategy and representation of such icons, this project explored the delicate relationship between two often opposed paradigms for mass configuration coexisting in the same architectural body: A monolithic solid and a heterogeneous accumulation of parts. Because iconicity is perceived visually, the mass and its wallpaper should also play complementary roles. The application of stripes—a painting strategy which abstracts the mass at its discrete edges—diffuses parts and confuses the whole simultaneously, thereby further redefine the role and current status of the icon.
