Founded in 2006, cityLAB is a vibrant center for research and design at UCLA Architecture and Urban Design directed by Professor Dana Cuff. cityLAB explores the challenges facing the 21st century metropolis through research and design, expanding the possibilities for our cities to grow more livably, sustainably, and beautifully. cityLAB's investigations comprise rigorous scholarship as well as practical implication, design and theory, and formal exploration of cultural and political consequence. The lab is a UCLA research center, undertaking projects related to its four core initiatives: the postsuburban metropolis, rethinking green, urban sensing, and new infrastructures.
Its significant endeavors include:
• PropX, an investigation to test new strategies for transforming the city through agile planning and constructive collaboration,
• Backyard Homes, which develops innovative and flexible solutions to the regional housing shortage,
• A series of studies about ways high speed rail can enhance urban design around stations, and
• WPA 2.0: Working Public Architecture, an international design ideas competition to reinvent urban infrastructure as hybrid community amenities.
xLAB is an international think tank initiative that examines architecture’s elastic boundaries and considers new possibilities through interdisciplinary collaboration in the study of the future built environment. As professional boundaries expand into other fields, architecture searches for a multi-dimensional approach to shaping future environments. For 21st Century design, architecture must not only develop strategies for the physical environment, but also consider the technical environment of information space. The design of static “space” has begun to transform into dynamic environments that also handle “time”--the base mode of information space. To build future environments, the design methodologies that have been developed to deal with static space need to be updated in order to address the intertwined mechanism of “space-time.” xLAB encourages partnerships with a range of industries to create a vast network of disciplinary possibilities. xLAB serves as an active platform in which to Research, Test, Share ideas between fields, people, and places.
