Three Generations Fit Under One Roof After a Modern Renovation in Southern California
Adjunct Assistant Professor Mohamed Sharif’s modern renovation of his 1940’s bungalow in Mar Vista was featured this month in Dwell.
The goal of the renovation was to modernize and enlarge the single-level, 1,330-square-foot bungalow to accommodate their three sons and mother-in-law. As new residents, “adapting and reusing and being sensitive to the neighborhood context was important,” Sharif says.
After zoning constraints led them to scrap plans for an accessory dwelling unit, he added an L-shaped, two-story volume at the rear that includes a wing for his mother-in-law—a move that doubled the original square footage.
