Frampton visits Barton Myers' Seminar

-Los Angeles Tuesday, March 15, 2012

Thomas Hines, Professor Emeritus, presented on the architecture and life of Rafael Soriano. Hines concentrated on Soriano's relationship to Richard Neutra and the struggle in his career to produce the modernist machine-aesthetic in Los Angeles. Kenneth Frampton, Ware Professor of Architecture at GSAPP, showed plans of Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian Houses to understand how the "microspaces" defined by furniture, glazing and light were influenced by his time in Los Angeles where he employed both Neutra and Rudolf Schindler. Frampton discussed the intricate representational techniques of Neutra's and floor plans of Schindler's King's Rd House where the microspaces were even more compelling than their teacher's.
