A.UD Students Travel to China

China National Stadium by Herzog and de Meuron, Beijing

This long standing collaborative studio led by UCLA Professor Ben Refuerzo and Tianjin University Professor Xu Zhen to design a cultural arts district including a museum, artists studios, housing, and a community center on Yunbao Island outside of Tianjin recently traveled to China.  In their design work the students were asked to  confront ideas of identity, tradition, and community in a modern China that is continually reinventing itself. Tianjin University hosted the UCLA group for a four-day workshop and mid-review, while the Tianjin University students will travel to Los Angeles for the final review in December. In addition to the workshop in Tianjin, the UCLA graduate students visited the Commune by the Great Wall as well as noted Beijing architectural icons including the Bird's Nest Stadium, Water Cube, and CCTV headquarters.
