Giant Greenhouse, Suprastudio Summer Session 2011
When is a building big enough to be considered a micro-city? How can continuously connected urban environments of a hyper designed nature affect our senses and how we operate and navigate in the future? And how can the representational techniques of film and multi-media shift the way in which we think about and actually design the environment?
These questions and many more will be taken up in Suprastudio 04/ 2011-2012, a yearlong immersive studio based post professional course. Professor Neil Denari, with Stephen Deters, will lead UCLA graduate students into a speculative yet very real world of technology, ranging from specialized structures and envelope design to smart communications systems. Indeed, from spectacular buildings to invisible infrastructure, cities are like any other machine or organism, constantly in need of revitalization, replacement, and invention. Suprastudio 04 will focus its inquiries into urban form and human interface in the city on a well known site in Los Angeles: Westwood Village. Nothing less than the complete transformation of this site will be the expected outcome.
The summer studio work, Giant Greenhouse, led by Assistant Professor Jason Payne focuses on the unique problems associated with design at very large scales. Over the course of six weeks student designers propose massive, 2 mile by 2.5 mile greenhouse structures on a site in the Coachella Valley.
