OVERVIEW

The Figure is a form that is connected to a sensation, and that ‘conveys the violence of this sensation directly to the nervous system’. More specifically, for the purposes of the studio, Figure is an oscillating form between representation and abstraction. It is specific in its’ affect, yet never enables a definitive interpretation to settle in. In other words, the studio works on issues of representation in order to test whether representation can be used as an architectural effect without falling into the traps associated with post modern and phenomenological architecture, such as metaphor or narrative. The research focused on a design for an Orthodox church in Finland for Metropolitan Ambrosius and it is paralleled by technological explorations of animation- based techniques in form generation and research into robotic manufacturing of high tech wood products by Finnforest.
