OVERVIEW

Steel House Studio: With the background and history of the 20th century house as a backdrop, this quarter’s work will focus on the constraints and logics of grids, geometric prisms, and platonic spatial typologies within the context of an approximately 2,000 sf house located in Los Angeles.

Also known as “The New California Steel House” this studio focuses on the design development of a single building– a single family home, the residential steel building – through close examination of the Case Study house, a Southern Californian specimen. The course is built on the cumulative development of architectural knowledge and encompasses the various adjacent displaces that make up a buildable architectural project. From code and zoning interpretation, complex programming, structural limitations, sustainable concerns and possibilities for more complex building systems to push the extents of architectural design and technologies.
