UCLA

OVERVIEW

The first quarter of the second year M.Arch 1 program focuses on the disciplinary issues, techniques and organization of the urban landscape – more specifically the city’s infrastructure, fabric and public spaces in relation to water, landforms, and plants in natural light, heat, and ventilation. As a complex hybrid of landscape and building, the city is used as a didactic and actual context for the investigation and invention of new models of and analogs for the role of the landscape and open space in architecture, and vice versa. The focus is not on the architecture of the individual iconic building but rather on the architecture of the prototypical – the invention of new typologies of urban living whose potency lies not in their singularity but in their repetition by looking at architecture’s extensive logics and power – the more there is the better.
