Tech Seminar Midterm Review Winter 2017
SUPRASTUDIO Students presented the progress on their tech seminar projects. The aim of the seminar is to develop a human-robot interface around a specific fabrication technique by utilizing another end arm tool for the KUKA Agilus robots and controlling it with the Vive controllers. For the midterm, students presented their research on the materials used, end-arm robot prototypes, fabrication processes, AR overlays and first models following the protocols they developed. The AR overlay on top of the camera feedback will combine the precision of robotics with the familiarity of physical interaction.
Assigned methods for this process are as following:
Subtraction and Dissolving:
For this technique, the aim is to manipulate a raw piece of material and use a subtractive method. The object is driven by reduction and phase changes of the material. The goal is to break with 2,5 D constraints in subtractive fabrication and generate a rather complex topology through human interaction. The subtraction of the material can be achieved by dissolving and melting the material with acetone or a heat gun.
Addition and Aggregation:
In this category, students are focusing on methods such as nesting and composition as a process of addition and aggregation. The goal is to develop objects that are defined by cumulative aggregation and render a multidirectional massing. The intention is to fabricate objects that are conceptualized by principles like gravity, catenary curves, vaults and interlocked parts. This can be achieved by melting wax, extruding foam or by weaving strings and threads to an aggregated network.
The jury included Steve Lee, Julia Koerner, Forrest Whitmore, Shih-Yuan Wang as well as lead lecturer Guvenc Ozel and tech seminar instructors Benjamin Ennemoser and Mertcan Buyuksandalyaci.
