SYMPOSIUM
-Culture of IDEAS | Room 1102

MODERATED BY: Greg Lynn, A.UD Professor

Students and faculty at A.UD are engaged with popular and commercial culture combined with a specific critical vision that yields not only culturally relevant design work, but more importantly, creative and innovative design. By focusing on contemporary issues of experience, technology, craft, urbanism or commerce, the role of the architect is expanded and empowered in new ways.

During the 2013-2014 academic year, professor Greg Lynn contributed to the critical debate at the department by organizing the Culture of Ideas Lecture Series, where contemporary innovators in design, art, and architecture (i.e., IDEAbuilder Greg Howes; artist Ian Barry; Gehry Technologies CTO, Dennis Shelden; Vice President of Creative / R & D for Walt Disney Imagineering, Scott Trowbridge; and NIKE Senior Creative Director, Byron Merritt) came to the school to share their design aspirations with the students and public audience.

This panel discussion moderated by Lynn brings together for the first time the Culture of IDEAS presenters including UCLA faculty to explore further how popular and commercial culture drives fresh ideas and techniques into design projects.

PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE:

-Ian Barry, artist
-Erin Besler, A.UD teaching fellow 2013-14
-Craig Hodgetts, UCLA A.UD professor
-Greg Howes, IDEAbuilder
