Retirement Lecture: Barton Myers

Barton Myers, joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture in 1980. During his tenure at the University, he participated in the Urban Innovations Group (UIG), a teaching practice at the UCLA Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning and led the competitions for the Bunker Hill Master Plan, Los Angeles Olympic Village Multi-Cultural Center, and the Music Center Expansion for Disney Hall. Established in 1971 by the late Dean, Harvey Perloff, UIG was an active office where students could work as interns on actual architectural and planning projects. During the 1980s Barton taught in the M.Arch. II program when such distinguished alumni as Hank Koning, Julie Eizenberg, and Bob Hale attended. Over the past twelve years his focus has been on teaching the Comprehensive Design Studio: Steel House Studio.
Barton Myers, FAIA, is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, former member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada where he received the 2009 USITT Distinguished Achievement in Architecture Award, 1994 Gold Medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and is the 2002 recipient of the prestigious American Institute of Architecture/Los Angeles Gold Medal. He has won numerous design awards, including several American Institute of Architects and Progressive Architecture awards. The recipient of the 2003 American Institute of Architecture/California Merit Award, in 2002 he received the American Institute of Architecture/PIA Housing Award for Innovation in Housing Design and the California Preservation Foundation’s Rehabilitation & Adaptive Re-Use Award, among others. Myers work is the subject of the recent monograph Three Steel Houses (Images Publishing Group).
