This past September Lecturer Eui-Sung Yi was invited to participate on a panel discussion for Arq. Futuro Magazine’s forum on architecture and urbanism in Rio de Janeiro.
ARCHITECTURE: NEW CHALLENGES
DEBATE AMONG: EUI-SUNG YI, PEDRO RIVERA WASHINGTON FAJARDO (SECRETARY OF CULTURAL HERITAGE, CITY OF RIO), RAUL JUSTE LORES (FOLHA DE SAO PAULO – MODERATOR)
Although the practice of architecture is increasingly challenged by complex environmental, social, political and economic forces, architects today have a wide variety of tools and strategies to design and build structures that can inspire and endure. Whether at the scale of the street or the city, technological experimentation and retrofitting priorities have expanded the architect’s toolbox. So too has the increasing importance of community participation, and the expanding role of universities engaged in neighborhood change and policy issues. Following presentations of award--‐ winning projects of Morphosis, and a close look at interventions by Rua Arquitetos, panelists will discuss the current state of architecture education, public commissions and competitions.
