A.UD Lecturer and Daly Genik Principal Kevin Daly is updating and designing new facilities for UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music. The current facilities, which include the Schoenberg Music Building originally built in 1955, designed by Welton Becket are located across from Murphy Hall and Perloff Hall and face the iconic inverted fountain. The building houses the three music departments with supporting program elements including the music library, special collections archive, auditoria, the Ethnomusicology archive, and offices.

The music facilities have been stretched to the limits by the demands of a growing and diverse program. Creating a master plan to re-imagine and expand the spaces to support an integrated approach to the study of music Daly Genik’s new design encourages porosity among the departments and facilitates collaboration among students and faculty.

Daly Genik began the process by searching for common threads and underlying traits between the three department programs. The school has a remarkable interdisciplinary educational agenda with the following themes: practice, performance, research, academia, social interaction, and an increasing use of technology. The project is comprised of two new buildings that create an entrance to the reorganized music campus. One building is a state-of-the-art recording facility, designed to classic Hollywood recording studio standards. Highly technical, the studio is large enough for ensemble use and intimate enough for individual performers. The flanking building houses a cafe and ensemble practice room at the ground floor, mixing and mastering spaces in the basement, and faculty offices and studios on the upper levels.
