Drawn: Alumni Exhibition
DRAWN: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF A.UD ALUMNI WORK
APRIL 20 - MAY 29, 2015
In the spirit of leveling the dichotomy between the aesthetics of architectural representation and its instrumentality, UCLA Architecture and Urban Design invites all alumni to submit drawings for an exhibition to honor the department's 50th anniversary. This exhibition in the Perloff Gallery celebrates the diversity of our alumni's wide-ranging accomplishments, and serves as the inaugural event to form an A.UD alumni association.
We are seeking analog or digital drawings from alumni, representative of any developmental phase of a project, from conceptual sketch to construction detail. The submitted drawing should consist of linework, but may represent any stage or speed of production; whether it is a fast sketch that was needed to solve a construction detail on site, or a laboriously drafted composition as long as the drawing is endowed with the intention of solving specific problems.
Rather than curate the exhibition based on a priori categories or an aesthetic agenda, we are aiming to let the collection organize itself by seeing what genres and/or subgenres emerge a posteriori. Drawings should be submitted in an Illustrator file; please find graphic template in submittal form.
"Working drawings embody a more complicated aesthetics of utility, where formal decisions are motivated by consequences in the world. Although it is theoretically feasible, I am not sure that it is actually possible to make a good building with bad drawings. It is precisely by not searching for formal or aesthetic effect but rather by solving specific problems that working drawings paradoxically succeed as aesthetic or formal artifacts."
