A.UD third year, M.Arch. I student Julie Mithun was awarded a paid design Internship with Shelter Co., Ltd. in Japan for 2013. Each spring students have the opportunity to apply to work in Yamagata, Japan for approx. eight weeks during the summer for Shelter Co., Ltd. . Shelter Co., Ltd. is a design and construction company based in Japan that specializes in using the KES System, patented for building system components, and wood frame construction techniques. The KES system, which was developed by Shelter in 1974, is an award-winning wooden framing system, awarded Japanese Government honors for innovation in design and manufacturing, the “Good Design” seal from the Japanese Government, and named one of the Best New Products of 1999 by Architecture Record. In the past two years, Shelter was honored to receive both the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister's Award (2011) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Science Minister’s Award (2012).
