Ian Barry
Artist, Los Angeles

Ian Barry is a Los Angeles-based artist, whose unique use of context and materials bridges the boundaries of sculpture and functional design. Barry’s work seamlessly transforms familiar objects and industrial materials into dynamic artworks with multiple purposes and meanings.

Using motorcycle engines and industrial materials as translating mechanisms in his work, his philosophical questioning continues to critically alter the dynamics between art and design, and has propelled him from the beginning of his career to the present.

Barry’s earlier works, The BulletThe Kestrel, and The Black, are a succinct expression of his response to the first fifty years of motorcycles, The White is his exploration of the present and the future and of how forms exist independently of time.

Culture of IDEAS Series

Organized by Professor Greg Lynn, the Culture of IDEAS Lecture Series will show that an engagement with popular and commercial culture combined with a specific critical vision yields not only culturally relevant design work, but more importantly, creative and innovative design.  By focusing on contemporary issues of experience, technology, craft, urbanism or commerce the role of the architect is expanded and empowered in new ways by these lecturers. Presenters will return to UCLA in June to participate in our annual RUMBLE symposium
