PROFILE

Wil Carson is design director and co-founder of 64North, a multidisciplinary studio collaborating across traditional boundaries to create architecture, branding, websites, business strategy, and product design. His work as an architect builds on his background as a filmmaker and creative director, advancing design through a synthesis of ecology, economics, and experience.

Carson, one of ENR’s “Top 20 Designers Under 40,” has received multiple awards from the AIA and the Illuminating Engineering Society, the Hays-Brandeis Fellowship for the Arts, and a 2016 Progressive Architecture Award. Recently, 64North has won three international design competitions, including Long Beach’s Mobile ArtSpace, Palo Alto’s Adobe Creek Bridge, and the Shishan Cultural District in Suzhou, China. His work has been featured in Architecture, Architectural Record, Icon, The New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal, and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Carson received his A.B. from Harvard University, his Master’s in Architecture from UCLA, studied at Vienna’s Universitat fur Angewandten Kunst, and was a postgraduate fellow at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan University. In the decade prior to founding 64North, Carson was the senior designer for Michael Maltzan Architecture, where he was responsible for works including the Sixth Street Viaduct, the New Carver Apartments, S.F. State’s Mashouf Performing Arts Center, and the Star Apartments, one of Time’s “25 Best Inventions of 2015.” His films have been made possible by the Ford Foundation and are distributed by Filmakers Library / Alexander Street.
