KEVIN DALY

Lecturer

PROFILE

For over twenty years Kevin Daly has pursued an architecture that delves into the paradoxes of the urban condition and the consequences of intervention. Beginning with the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, which ultimately became a nine year, four project program for reclaiming and transforming sites throughout the densely populated Los Angeles region, he has consistently challenged the notion of what is public architecture. His exhaustive design process, bolstered by material and technical research, marries traditional (model making, sketching) with contemporary (computer rendering and animation) processes.

Mr. Daly led the design effort for a number of the firm’s award-winning projects including the Valley Center House, the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy, the Camino Nuevo High School, and the new Art Center College of Design South Campus Building. Current projects in the office include a new 120,000 sf Museum at Harvard University, the modernization and expansion of UCLA’s School of Music, and the new Edison Language Center for the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District.

In addition to over twenty state and local AIA design awards, Kevin Daly’s work has been recognized with a National AIA Honor Award for Design, a National AIA Education Award, a Gold Medal from the Bruner Foundation, a Millennium Award from Global Green, and his firm received the first ever AIA/LA Firm of the Year Award in 2009.

He has served on juries and lectured at a number of institutions including Stanford University, Cornell University, Rice University, the Vico Morcote in Switzerland, the Architectural League of New York, the University of Texas at Austin, and RISD.

In 1999 Daly, Genik was selected as one of eight “Emerging Voices” by the Architectural League of New York and featured on the cover of Metropolis, in 2001 they participated in All American by Brian Carter and Annette LeCuyer, and in 2005 the firm was one of only five American firms to be selected and featured in Phaidon Press’s 10x10_2, which showcases the world’s 100 most exceptional emerging architects selected by ten leading figures in architecture and architectural criticism. In 2009 Daly Genik was selected as the inaugural Firm of the Year by the AIA/LA and also received a National AIA Honor Award for the Camino Nuevo High School.
