FAQs

How do I submit my graduate application portfolio?

Applicants to our professional graduate programs (M. Arch I and M. Arch II) are required to submit a portfolio of creative works. This portfolio MUST be in a print format. However, it is not required that students submit them in person, but you can feel free to do so during office hours, which are Monday - Friday, from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.. Otherwise, you can send your portfolio throught the mail, or use a courier service, such as FedEx, UPS, or another company. Please see below in the FAQ for the address.

I have a Bachelor's degree, but it is not in Architecture. Am I eligible to apply for one of your professional Master's programs? For which professional Master's program am I eligible to apply?

You would be eligible to apply for the three-year M. Arch I program. This program is open to students who hold a Bachelor's degree even if it is not in Architecture.
I have a pre-professional Bachelor's degree in Architecture. Which professional design program do I apply for, the M. Arch I, or the M. Arch II?

Students with a four-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Architectural Design, or Environmental Design are eligible for to apply for the M. Arch I program. This three-year degree program is professionally accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). This program is designed for students aspiring to be licensed architects.
I have a five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree that is accredited for professional licensure. To which graduate program am I eligible to apply?

You are eligible to apply for the one-year M. Arch II program. This program is designed for students who hold a professionally-accredited degree in Architecture. This program is NOT accredited for professional licensure, so students with licensed degrees are considered for admission.
What is the difference between the M. Arch I, M. Arch II, MA, and PhD programs?

a) The M. Arch I program is a three-year, design-based professional program accredited for licensure by the NAAB. It was created for students who hold a four-year Bachelor's degree, either in Architecture or some other field, who are interested in becoming practicing architects.
b) The M. Arch II program is a one-year, design-based, post-professional program designed for students seeking advanced training in Architecture, promoting critical practice by emphasizing applied research. Students with professionally-accredited degrees in Architecture are considered for admission.
c) The Master of Arts in Architecture (MA) program is a two-year, research-based program culminating in a thesis. This program prepares students for pursuing a PhD either in Architecture or a related field, to engage in research for non-academic purposes, teach, or pursue employment in the museum setting. MA students are interested in the areas of critical studies and architectural history. Please note that there are no design courses affiliated with this program.
d) The PhD program is also an academic, research-based degree program for students interested in the area of critical studies and architectural history. However, the PhD program requires six years to complete, and culminates in a dissertation. Please note that there are no design courses affiliated with this program.
I am interested in applying for the M. Arch I program. I have a Bachelor's degree, but not in Architecture. Am I required to submit a portfolio with my application? If I am, what would I put in the portfolio, since I do not have an architectural design background?

Our faculty are expecting to see a visually creative, fine art portfolio from a student who did not major in Architecture. Your portfolio can contain images of your drawings, paintings, models, sculptures, designs, computer graphics, and/or photography.
I see that we can upload our application materials to the online Application for Graduate Admission (AGA). Could I also upload my portfolio?

Most application materials can be uploaded to the AGA, but the porfolio MUST be sent in a print format, preferably bound. We do not accept any form of digital media for the portfolio.
What is the graduate application deadline? Is the application deadline different from the portfolio deadline?

December 15 is the deadline for all application materials. Please see below for the complete list.
I am an International applicant to one of your graduate programs. Am I required to submit a GRE score in addition to my TOEFL score?

Yes, ALL applicants to our graduate programs are required to submit an official GRE score sheet via ETS, even if you, as an International applicant, have or plan to submit an official TOEFL score sheet.
I see that both portfolio of creative work and sample of written work are listed as required application components. Are they required of all applicants to your graduate programs?

Applicants to either the M. Arch I or the M. Arch II programs are required to submit a printed portfolio of creative works. This should be sent to the Architecture Department in a hard copy format by the application deadline. Applicants to either the MA or PhD programs required to submit a sample of written work. This can be uploaded to the AGA. It is not necessary to send a sample of your written work as a hard copy to the Architecture Department.

I am applying to one of your graduate programs. What do I need to submit as part of my application?

When I graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies, am I eligible to work as an architect?

The Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies is not a degree that is accredited for professional licensure. Students who complete this program will need to continue on to a professionally-accredited Master's program, like UCLA AUD's M. Arch I program, or any other similar program.
Can a student or prospective applicant to the BA in Architectural Studies program take courses in advance to graduate earlier?

Answer: It takes a full two years to complete the required courses for this major. Courses cannot be taken in advance to complete the major requirements. Please see Degrees & Programs : B.A. in Architectural Studies for more information.
I am applying as a transfer applicant to the BA in Architectural Studies program. What Architecture courses should I take to be eligible to apply for the Architectural Studies major?

Transfer applicants must meet all transfer eligiblity requirements listed on the Undergraduate Admissions Office web site. There are no Architecture courses that need to be completed before beginning course work here. There are three pre-major courses, which Transfer students can take while attending UCLA during their junior year. Two of these pre-major courses, (ARCH&UD 10A History of Architecture - Antiquity to Mannerism, and ARCH&UD 10B History of Architecture - Baroque to the present) can be completed outside of UCLA, but must meet our curricular requirements, and the student must receive a grade of "B" or above. Please check with AUD admissions staff to find out if the courses you have taken will fulfill one of these pre-major requirements. ARCH&UD 30 Introduction to Architectural Studies is the another pre-major requirement, but it MUST be taken at UCLA.
I am a UCLA sophomore student interested in applying for the BA in Architectural Studies program, but I have not completed the pre-major requirements. Am I still eligible to apply this year?

Yes, you are still eligible to apply. UCLA students can complete the pre-major requirements while taking the junior-level major courses as a junior. However, we strongly recommend working toward completing the pre-major requirements before you apply.
I am applying to the BA in Architectural Studies program. What do I need to submit as part of my application?

What are your hours of operation?

The Department of Architecture & Urban Design main office is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.
Where is the Architecture Department main office located?

The Department of Architecture & Urban Design main office is located at 1317 Perloff Hall. The building is in the north eastern part of campus. Please refer to the Contact page for more information.
Do I need to make an appointment to see the Advisor?

It is not necessary to make an appointment to see the Student Advisor Jim Kies, who sees prospective applicants on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday from the hours of 8:00 am - 12:00 pm, and 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. If you would like to make an appointment, please contact Jim at 310.825.0525.
